  • StatusUpdate : Python issue has been resolved. Website should be fully functional gain. Please report any issues
  • guest_2852 : I see that the Alerts link is down...is that part of the Python issue? Is a log-on required for the Alert link and/or the streaming link?
  • StatusUpdate : Windows update broke Python on server. Working on a fix now.
  • Tom : If you listen long enough you can get a general gist of what they are.
  • guest_9963 : Is there a list of what the 10 codes mean somewhere? I've found some but it's not specific to Madison and there's some that don't seem to make sense
  • guest_3474 : Sunject
  • MnBadger : 333 W Dayton St. Subject with a gun
  • MnBadger : Will be working on the back-end Saturday afternoon. Audio will be messy.
  • MnBadger : Working on the site today (Thursday). Audio will be messy for a bit.
  • MnBadger : Well there’s a bug that has everything on repeat. The archives still work. Will fix in the AM
  • MnBadger : Might be down for periods of time on Sunday for some new updates.
  • MnBadger : I'm doing most of this in Python. This project has been pretty helpful in learning how to incorporate AI into my programming abilities. Probably why I don't get yelled at for doing it at work. Icecast is great if you want to pay for a relay server or have massive delay. Ideally I want to have a customizable link generator where you select the channels you'd like to hear, and it will generate a link that will only play them. Those links should work in any device capable of playing a live audio URL.
  • Tom : MnBadger, what are you using to build the "Back end"? Sounds like it's a lot of work. Are there not pre-built system like Icecast that would work?
  • MnBadger : Just want to re-iterate, this site is still very much in beta. I'm working on polishing off a few things on the back-end right now that should make listening a better experience.
  • MnBadger : I'll work on getting the Madison scanner profiles available online. However, I would caution it's still not the easiest thing to setup. I know there are newer APCO25 scanners that have everything pre-programmed but I've heard several complaints about them being difficult to customize.
  • guest_7686 : This is great!
  • guest_8038 : I came here to ask about the TAC channels. No idea that locking the public out was even on the table but that does make sense. Guess that’s why Broadcastify doesn’t allow TAC channels? How hard is it to program a scanner? It looks like Uniden has profiles for their scanners. Any way you could share the one you use for Madison?
  • guest_3046 : That would be awesome!
  • MnBadger : A login type system could work. I'm working on a better chat that can more center around current events going on in the city. It'll help organize stuff a bit better. A super-user could start "Event A" and have a separate chat area for that while another area could be for "Event B". The super-user could select the area effected that would send out an email alert. Then there'd still be a main chat area for stuff like dev and off-topic. Mt. Horeb was certainly a turning point for Broadcastify here in town. From my understanding, DCS went after them hard. Unsure of what legal ground they had to stand on but it doesn't really matter. Traffic is still super low, only 62 unique users in the past day.
  • guest_9836 : Hey MnBadger, how easy would it be to create a login system? I image that spam will eventually become a problem on here and a login would also have the added benefit of filtering out the cry babies. Really appreciate everything you do. I think I know who you are and what you do, professionally. Can't believe you have the time to do all this on the side. If I know anything about websites I'd offer to help. Out of curiosity, can you tell how many people are using the site?
  • guest_6969 : People need to stop whining about the tac channels. It's the smart move. If you really want to listen to them in real-time just buy your own scanner. I don't think MPD and DCS really care about transparency. The first major incident where a scanner or scanner app is found to have assisted in criminal activity will be the last. This is a P25 digital network. One flip of a switch and everything is inaccessible to the public.
  • MnBadger : Your wife makes a great Negroni, Tommy.
  • MnBadger : Active night on State St and apparently here as well!! I wasn’t aware that Dane CO’s distain for accountability was that publicly known. People can whine all they want about the delay. They have two options, get their own scanner or deal with it. I’m not going to provide a reason that helps push full encryption to reality. I added this chat hoping users would benefit from discussions regarding current events. Ideally someone who is late to the party could log on and easily get caught up to an event happening in their community.
  • Tom : YouTube Radio had a live Madison police feed with tac channels included. Even the ENCRYPTED ONES. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ
  • LesMcburny : You’re missing the point. The entire reason for the delay is so we CAN listen to the tac channels. I’ve been listening for years. The frequency that dispatch throws events to encrypted tac13 keeps growing. MBadger is not wrong - there have been multiple discussions of going full encrypted on all channels on Dane Comm. Dane County Sheriff is pushing that every chance they get. After the Mt. Horeb school shooting was aired live on a tac channel via Broadcastify the sheriff threatened legal action. Buy your own scanner and stop fucking crying about it. Everyone complaining on here and Broadcastify acting like they are paying for a service and getting ripped off.
  • guest_7686 : I would love to know whether there are concrete examples of something consequential ever actually occurring (something that negatively impacted law enforcement activities), because people could listen to TAC channels.
  • MnBadger : A 1-year API key to a popular voice to text service has been donated. I'm going to start working on a script to convert all radio calls to text. This would allow users to set up email/sms alerts for specific words spoke such as their street address. Would this be of interest to users? Any concerns regarding this? I think I would prohibit peoples names as alerts but that's all I can currently think of.
  • MnBadger : Will be back online on the 17th around 5pm
  • MnBadger : Will be working on the server today (Jan 16th). Should be back up later this evening
  • MnBadger : No that would be Sun Prairie Alerts
  • guest_8928 : Does this cover Sun Prairie?
  • guest_1280 : Should be available in archives...
  • guest_1055 : Hello...wondering how to go back to a specific date to listens to calls...thanks
  • MnBadger : Dane County Sheriff has raised concerns, but it’s also a middle ground that many feed providers follow. The worst-case scenario is that the county enables full encryption, completely locking the public out. The current system has this ability, but it’s not enabled. In the last few years, a handful of cities have enabled full encryption on their entire system. Madison does prioritize transparency, but an argument has been made, specifically about TAC channels, that it can interfere with ongoing operations. Since any information broadcast on an open TAC channel is essentially perishable, I think a one-hour delay is a good compromise.
  • MnBadger : Happy to see people starting to use the chat!
  • guest_8989 : I would guess DCS complained
  • guest_1055 : Why the removal of the TAC channels? That your idea of did Madison Police ask for it?
  • JeffH : Hey MnBadger, can I get your email address? I have some questions about police scanners for vehicles. Or you can email me at jeffholman22@gmail.com
  • MnBadger : Working on the scripting right now. Will be back this evening (Sunday)
  • JeffH : Thanks for all your hard work!
  • MnBadger : New script to sort audio files seems to be holding up. Please let me know if you hear/see any bugs. Repeated audio should be very minimized. Tac channels will now have a 2 hour delay before being placed into archives. The time stamp still should be valid. They should also have a special tag that indicates they were delayed.
  • MnBager : @JeffH great to hear! For now you may hear some repeated calls. We're working on logic to process audio files that has a bug. It should only happen with calls over 60 seconds long so... not that often
  • JeffH : This is great!! I do security at low income housing and this is a great resource for me to keep situational awareness since I don’t have access to LEO/EMS radio traffic. Thank you greatly for doing this!
  • MnBadger : @FrankyWooo - Absolutely will try
  • FrankyWooo : Love how much effort you're putting into this! Friday nights are my night to enjoy the chaos around town. Hoping you can have this up and running later tonight! Thanks again.
  • MnBager : Working on logic to allow delayed audio in the archives. There may be repeated and delayed audio today (Friday).
  • MnBadger : If anyone wants to help with the "notes" portion of the channels in https://livemadisonalerts.com/agency/ that would be great. Just relay them through this chat for now.
  • MnBadger : Our current server is getting replaced. Until then time stamps will be off on the archives. The bios battery failed and neither of is us have the motivation to dig way back into a server closet for this machine. New server arrives later today, hopefully will be online next week. Once that happens FD, EMS, and delayed tac channels will be added to a secondary feed. They’ll also be included in our new and improved archive page which is very neat. You can sort what you want to listen to very prec
  • MnBadger : Thanks! Will update.
  • guest_2202 : What a great resource!! If you want to update the channel list, split city occurs from 10:30 am-2:30 am daily
  • MnBadger : Great news! We received a donation that will allow us to upgrade the base server which will greatly increase up-time/reliability. This upgrade should come sometime in January.
  • MnBadger : Audio issues reported. Working on a fix now.
  • MnBadger : We'll be working on the site this morning (Friday) and the audio feed will be down for a bit
  • Kirsty : Morning, all! What a great site!
  • MnBadger : Audio should be fixed
  • MnBadger : Will be trying to fix the background audio tomorrow. There’s a lot of static on IOS right now but fine on other devices. Then some design tweaks and I’ll also be adding a second feed for fire. I’m hoping both feeds can be played at one. ALSO made great progress on allowing this feeds (on the chat) page to stay transmitting even when phones are locked. The only reason the audio now should stop is if the user clicks a new audio element.
  • MnBadger : Hmmm.... I'll look into that. What browser are you using?
  • Willow92 : I think the scanner feed stops when chatting?
  • Willow92 : Wow that was fast lol
  • MnBadger : Sure! I'll get on that.
  • Willow92 : Can we get a list of covered channels? This will be sweet!
  • MnBadger : If anyone looking at this knows Jquery and web-socket well. We're trying to get rid of the hacky iframe by displaying the web-socket data instead. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's slightly outside our knowledge base.
  • guest_1613 : Haha yea
  • guest_6374 : This will be very useful!! The radio feed plays even when my phone is locked. Exactly what I was searching for.
  • MnBadger : Wow! This actually works. Anyone that hears or see anything important going on in Madison feel free to give it a post. I know several people don't like using Reddit so hopefully this is easier.
